AFROINDIGO GUINEA

According to women’s rights and gender equality reports, Guinea is one of the worst countries for girls to get an education, as 1 in 4 become underaged brides. Girls are often overworked with house chores and burdened with centuries of traditional practices. Young girls are impressionable and highly susceptible to social influences, vulnerable and preyed upon sexually.

AfroIndigo provides a nurturing space to develop the leadership of girls through sisterhood, peer-education, co-learning and policy advocacy projects and campaigns on issues affecting their local communities and broader environment, such as policy enforcement  on female genital mutilation, gender violence, underage marriage, corporal punishments, prevention of maternal deaths to public investment in reproductive rights/health and early education to promoting equal access and employment opportunities. Their voices will decide and set the tone of the campaigns.

VISION

To create opportunities to improve the economic prospects of these young girls to break the cycle of generational poverty and violence that besets many women in their communities and grow up confidently and develop into healthy adulthood.

PURPOSE

To provide transformative experience to instill confidence and positiveness around their identities; to develop their abilities and realize their power and agency over their lives and live boldly and courageously to build a better world.

  • We impart self-awareness in our participants to build their own power to change themselves and the institutional structures that create their circumstances and shape their attitudes: transforming their social, political and economic conditions.
  • We promote their self-confidence, positiveness around their identities to realize their powers and agency over their lives
  • We envision a just and equitable world where every girl has the opportunity to education and a chance to fulfill her potential, to grow in a safe environment, free of discrimination, from fear of sexual and gender violence, and create a future of their choice.

PROGRAMS

We would offer trainings in computer literacy, graphic design, photography and arts, and a safe space to gather and build comradeship. Girls would have access to the printshop to work on projects and campaigns of their choosing. We would also connect the girls with tutors and mentors. And, we would contract with local artisans to procure and produce natural lotions and creams and provide a venue to sell/buy their products.
